Privacy Policy

Slower Hours is a one-person website with nothing to sign up for. This page explains, in plain terms, what happens to information when you read it.

1. Who is responsible for this site

Slower Hours (slowerhours.com) is an independent publication. The operator of the site is responsible for the handling of any personal information described on this page, and can be reached at hello@slowerhours.com.

2. The short version

There is no account to create, no newsletter to join, no comment box, no contact form, no search box and no shopping cart on this site. There is nowhere to type your name, your email address or anything else. No advertising network, analytics product or tracking pixel runs here.

What remains is the ordinary, unavoidable business of serving a web page, described below.

3. What is collected

Information you provide directly

None, because there is no way to provide any. The only exception is if you choose to send an email — see section 7.

Information collected automatically

Standard web server request records, described in section 4, held by the company that hosts the site.

Information stored in your own browser

A single light-or-dark display preference, described in section 5. It never leaves your device.

Sensitive categories

No health, financial, biometric, precise location, racial, religious, political or sexual-orientation information is collected, inferred or stored by this site.

Nothing collected in connection with this site is ever sold, rented, traded or shared for advertising purposes. There is no mailing list, so you cannot be added to one.

4. Server logs

Like effectively every website, Slower Hours is served by a hosting company whose servers keep automatic request records. A typical entry contains:

• the IP address the request came from
• the date and time of the request
• the page or file requested, and whether it was served successfully
• the browser and operating system the request identified itself as (the user-agent string)
• the referring page, if your browser sent one

These records exist so the site can be kept online, secure and working — diagnosing errors, identifying abusive traffic, and confirming that pages load. They are generated by the hosting provider as part of delivering the service, are retained for a limited period under that provider’s own retention schedule, and are not combined with any other information, not used to build a profile of you, and not used for advertising.

5. Cookies and browser storage

This site sets no cookies. Not first-party, not third-party, not analytics, not advertising.

There is one piece of browser storage. If you use the light or dark switch in the top bar, your choice is saved in your browser’s localStorage under the key slowerhours-theme, with a value of either light or dark. Its only purpose is to show you the same display setting on your next visit.

• It stays on your device. It is never transmitted to this site, to me, or to anyone else.
• It contains no identifier of any kind and cannot be used to recognize you.
• You can delete it at any time by clearing site data in your browser settings. The site works normally without it.
• If you never touch the switch, nothing is stored at all, and the site simply follows the light or dark setting your operating system already reports.

6. Third parties

Three third parties are involved in delivering this site. None of them is an advertiser.

The hosting provider

Stores the site’s files and serves them to your browser. It handles the server logs described in section 4.

The domain registrar

Holds the registration of slowerhours.com. It has no access to visitor information.

Google Fonts

The typefaces used here (Fraunces and Newsreader) are loaded from Google’s font service. That means your browser makes a request to fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com, and Google receives your IP address and user-agent as part of that request, under Google’s own privacy policy. Google states that it does not use these requests to create profiles or serve ads. If you would rather not make that request, a content blocker set to block those two domains will stop it; the site remains fully readable in your browser’s default serif.

Articles sometimes link out to studies, journals, universities and reference databases. Once you follow such a link you are on someone else’s website, governed by their privacy policy, not this one.

7. If you write to me

If you email hello@slowerhours.com, I receive whatever you chose to put in that message: your email address, your name if you signed it, and the contents. That is held in the mailbox for the domain and used for one thing only — replying to you, or correcting an article if you have pointed out a mistake.

• Your address is never added to any list, because there is no list.
• Your message is never passed to anyone else, and never used for marketing.
• If your note leads to a published correction, the correction describes the error, not the person who reported it. You are named only if you ask to be.
• Correspondence is deleted once it no longer serves a purpose. Ask and I will delete it sooner.

8. Social media

Slower Hours may be linked from a social media page written by the same author. Anything that happens on a social network — what it logs, what it shows you, what it does with a like or a comment — is governed by that network’s terms and privacy policy, and is outside my control.

This site embeds no social widgets, no like buttons, no share scripts and no tracking pixels of any kind, so reading a page here does not report anything back to any social platform.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights over personal information about you — to know what is held, to obtain a copy, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to its use, or to be free from discrimination for exercising those rights. That includes residents of California under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA, residents of other United States states with comparable laws, and people in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area under the UK GDPR and GDPR.

In practice, the only personal information connected with this site that I hold at all is email you have sent me yourself. To exercise any right, write to hello@slowerhours.com and say what you would like done. I will answer within 30 days. For the server logs described in section 4, requests are passed on to the hosting provider, which holds them.

Slower Hours does not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and has never done so. There is therefore no “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” mechanism to offer, because there is nothing being sold or shared. Global Privacy Control signals are respected by default, since no tracking takes place to begin with.

10. Children

This site is written for adults and is not directed to children under 13. It knowingly collects no information from children, and since it collects no information from anyone through the site itself, there is nothing to delete. A parent or guardian with a concern can write to hello@slowerhours.com.

11. Changes to this policy

If this site ever adds something that collects information — a newsletter, a comment section, a contact form, analytics — this policy will be rewritten before that feature goes live, not afterwards, and the “last updated” date at the top will change. Material changes will be noted on the front page. The date at the top of this page always reflects the version currently in force.
